In a series celebrating BD’s Architect of the Year Awards finalists, we look at the Interior Architect of the Year shortlist

Earlier this year BD announced all the architects who made it on to the shortlists for our prestigious annual Architect of the Year Awards.

Now we are shining the spotlight on each category in turn and publishing a selection of the images that impressed the judges.

ConForm Architects

ConForm Architects

ConForm says it ‘cares deeply about how things come together’, with ‘the intricacies of key junctions, materiality and craftsmanship’ forming the conceptual basis for all projects.

These include Terzetto, a retrofit of a West Hampstead home with an extension that reinterprets the decorative bay windows of the area, and Achilles, a marble-clad extension in Hampstead. Ongoing work includes conversion of a Loire Valley chateau into a venue for weddings and viticulture-related tourism.

Drawing on its residential experience, the practice aims to craft workplaces that are ‘homely, amenity-rich, stylish, comfortable, informal and social’.

dMFK’s entry comprises four projects, including its own, a transformation of a ground floor showroom into a flexible workspace focusing on comfort, calmness and face-to-face interaction in London’s Fitzrovia. Other featured projects include a retrofit of a 1970s office building for Derwent London and 45 Whitfield Street, and MYO New Street Square, a flexible workspace for Landsec.

The entry includes two London retrofit projects chosen to highlight the ‘synergy’ between the practice’s architecture and interiors teams. One Exchange Square is an ongoing transformation of a postmodern office in the City of London, while City Hall (with Architecture 00) repurposes The Crystal exhibition centre into the Greater London Authority headquarters. The entry also features a fit-out for a Knightsbridge investment management client and Littledown House, a restoration of a listed property as part of a Bournemouth financial services complex.

A hotel and a library comprise the entry from HLM Architects, whose interior architecture team strives ‘to create spaces which are inspirational and memorable’.
At the University of Leeds, the Health Sciences Library is being refurbished to promote wellbeing and collaboration using biophilic design principles and sustainable materials.

At the Radisson Blu hotel in Sheffield, the interior finishes are influenced by both the city’s industrial heritage and its nearby moorland and reservoirs.

Four London projects include the £30 million transformation of 2 Triton Square, formerly the headquarters of Abbey National, for Santander. The retrofit aimed to create a ‘dynamic, future-focused’ workplace that promotes collaboration. Other featured projects comprise Point Blank Music School in a former warehouse in Hoxton, a co-working hub in West Hampstead, and the ongoing transformation of a 1970s building to create a hospitality-led West End headquarters for a global client.

Robert Rhodes Architecture + Interiors

Robert Rhodes Architecture + Interiors

The practice describes itself as having a passion for working with old buildings. Its entry demonstrates its approach of honouring the original nature of the building rather than fighting it. Craven Gardens integrates Japanese and Scandinavian influences into a renovation of an Edwardian home in south London, which includes a new kitchen and dining room extension. Myddelton Square is a sensitive restoration of a Grade II listed townhouse in Clerkenwell.

The practice says its interiors prioritise wellbeing, sustainability and adaptability, ensuring they stand the test of time and evolve with the needs of those who use them.

Its entry features four Gloucestershire projects. These include the interiors of Spirax-Sarco Engineering’s new headquarters and the conversion of a warehouse into a flexible showroom and events space for bathroom company Kohler Mira, both in Cheltenham. In Cirencester, the practice completed a digital skills centre for Cirencester College.

Four London workplaces comprise the entry from tp bennett. For BP, the practice created an office over eight floors designed to promote collaboration and innovative thinking, and with an emphasis on inclusivity and consideration of neurodiversity.

Capital Group’s new headquarters at 1 Paddington Square is inspired by the history and movement of the Paddington Basin surroundings. Workplaces for law firm Reed Smith at 1 Blossom Yard and Deutsche Bank at 21 Moorfields complete the submission.
