A “super slender” 37-storey tower in Birmingham has been given the go-ahead by the city’s planning committee.

Designed by Glancy Nicholls Architects, the £58m development will be 116.5m tall and just 9.5m wide, making it the UK’s first habitable “super slender” structure.

The plans for the tower, known as 211 Broad Street, will include a hotel with 264 apartment rooms, along with a bar, restaurant, gym and residents’ lounge.

The skyscraper, designed for client Taylor Grange Developments, will be located near Brindley Place, one of the new stops on the West Midlands Metro extension.

211 Broad Street will also be opposite The Bank, two other residential towers designed by the Jewellery Quarter-based architects.

Construction is expected to be finished in 2022.

The practice is currently working on several projects in Birmingham including the regeneration of Perry Barr for the Commonwealth Games and has designed 100 Broad Street, which is set to be the city’s tallest building.
