The first phase of the Allies and Morrison-masterplanned York Central scheme has been given detailed planning approval.
York Council yesterday approved the reserved matters application for phase 1C of the project, giving the green light for more than 1,000 homes, a commercial district, a 213-bedroom hotel, and a new western entrance to York railway station.
Architects working on the phase include Whittam Cox, which replaced Corstorphine & Wright on a 500-home build-to-rent plot earlier this year.
Other plots on the phase include an affordable housing scheme designed by Haworth Tompkins, a government office designed by Sheppard Robson, a 144-home residential neighbourhood designed by Cartwright Pickard and a hotel and station entrance by 3D Reid.
The scheme, on a 110-acres site including former railway land, is being developed by a joint venture between developers McLaren Property and Arlington Real Estate as part of a private-public partnership with Network Rail and Homes England.
The first phase includes 20% affordable housing, including 163 homes for social rent and 40 for intermediate rent. New public squares, an extensive public park and a network of courtyards, cycle ways and footpaths will be created to connect this new quarter to the rest of the city.
Construction will start on site next year following site investigation works.
