The proposed new house

Planning approval has been granted for The Lake House, a new-build home by Tom Turner Architects located within the Surrey Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.

According to the architect, the design is influenced by the vernacular forms of local farmsteads and incorporates traditional materials such as oak, clay tiles and sandstone.

Large windows provide views across the adjacent lakes and surrounding ancient woodland.

The project is part of a broader ecological strategy that includes replanting ancient woodland, reintroducing indigenous aquatic plants and restoring wildflower meadows in an effort to support local biodiversity.

Describing the design, practice director Tom Turner said: “The Lake House is conceived as a quiet, enduring presence in the landscape. It is a beautiful shelter from which to observe nature and a catalyst for restoring it.”

The site is located near a landscape originally laid out by Edward Kemp for Henry Doulton, the 19th-century industrialist known for Doulton & Co., later Royal Doulton. Kemp was a leading Victorian landscape architect and a former protégé of Joseph Paxton.

Tom Turner founded Brighton-based Tom Turner Architects in 2016 after previously working at Niall McLaughlin Architects and Duggan Morris.
