Grid has secured planning permission for a housing and community centre on Battersea Bridge Road in south-west London.

Wandsworth council approved the project, which will replace an existing chapel and create a new community hub and homes on a small corner plot.

The existing building, which is owned by the London City Mission, had become unfit for use.

Grid has worked up the new proposal, which includes new worship facilities and a completely new community building with larger, upgraded facilities, in partnership with local developer The Cherwell Group.

The scheme also includes meeting rooms, classrooms, a kitchen and offices, with the first floor including a separate affordable workspace.

Above these offices, are five floors of flats, with 37.5% designated as affordable. The housing provision is part of a wider scheme of regeneration taking place on neighbouring estates.

All homes in the project have access to good daylight levels, with the majority having two full aspects, said the architects.

The scheme will also use a range of sustainable energy sources, with multiple air-source heat pumps and a photovoltaic array.

There is an indoor cycle store on the ground floor to serve the community centre and homes.

The revenue from the housing will fund the new community facilities.

Work is expected to start on site next year.
