Seven international design teams are competing to deliver a new museum next to the UNESCO-listed Baptism Site on the east bank of the River Jordan.
Níall McLaughlin Architects and heneghan peng are among seven international practices shortlisted in the competition to design the Museum of Jesus’ Baptism at Bethany in Jordan, organised by Malcolm Reading Consultants.
The new museum is intended to stand alongside the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Bethany Beyond the Jordan, on the east bank of the River Jordan.
The competition seeks proposals for a story-led museum and garden dedicated to the history and significance of baptism in the Christian faith. The museum is scheduled to open in 2030, marking what many Christians believe will be the 2000th anniversary of Christ’s baptism.
The shortlist also includes AAU Anastas, Studio Anne Holtrop, Tatiana Bilbao ESTUDIO, Toshiko Mori Architect and Trahan Architects.
The museum will form the anchor of a wider masterplan for the area, which is expected to welcome up to 450,000 visitors annually.
The shortlisted teams’ concept designs are due to be revealed in autumn 2025, with the winning team expected to be announced by the end of the year.
