Scheme to stretch along northern bank of City’s Golden Horn estuary

Foster & Partners has unveiled its designs for a luxury retail complex on the banks of Istanbul’s Golden Horn estuary.

Called Golden Horn Plaza, it will consist of a series of interconnected pavilions designed to house “the world’s most prestigious luxury brands”, according to the practice.

It is part of the wider Tersane masterplan, which is set to transform 1.6km of unused land on the northern bank of the estuary which faces the city’s old town.

Masterplanned by Istanbul practice Tabanlıoğlu Architects, the Tersane development will create a promenade stretching along the waterfront with a mix of retail, residential, hospitality and cultural buildings interspersed with extensive green landscaping.

Foster & Partners’ plot has been designed to maximise walkability with a network of shaded streets, fountains and water features and a central plaza covered in a canopy of trees.

The practice said the landscape palette had been inspired by the historic gardens of Istanbul, which include the grounds of the 19th century Dolmabahçe Palace and the 15th century Topkapı Palace.

Fosters head of studio Nigel Dancey said: “Golden Horn Plaza is an integral part of the transformative masterplan for Istanbul’s waterfront.

“The scale and proportions of the development reflect the city’s maritime industrial heritage – ensuring it is in keeping with the layered historic surroundings.

“Architecture and landscaping work in harmony with one another to create a year-round cultural and lifestyle destination.”
