Building to be headquarters of local bank Sudameris

Foster & Partners has unveiled its designs for a 39-storey office tower in the capital of Paraguay.

The 188m tall Sudameris Plaza in Asunción will be the new headquarters of Sudameris, Paraguay’s largest bank.

The building, which Fosters said would become “emblematic of the [city’s] skyline”, features a distinctive layered form with an expressed concrete frame.

Sudameris will occupy the first six floors and the two highest floors, with the space in between to be leased as commercial office space.

At its base, the tower will be surrounded by a landscaped garden with retail space including cafes, shops and cultural spaces.

Building users will enter through a large double-height lobby, which is set back from the street to create a covered walkway around the base of the building.

Each floor will have an area of around 1,200sq m, with the building also containing various double and triple-height spaces leading out onto green outdoor terraces.

Foster & Partners head of studio David Summerfield said: “The elegant tower rises up from the green, shaded gardens at its base, creating an exciting new destination with cafes, shops and social spaces that are completely immersed in nature.”

Senior partner Niall Dempsey added: “The tower’s restrained elegance and timeless form symbolise the bank’s enduring presence in the region.”

Sudameris was founded in Paris in 1910 to serve markets in South America. It was disbanded in the early 2000s but survives in the form of its former local operations in Paraguay and Colombia.
