Buildings by O’Donnell & Tuomey and Diller Scofidio & Renfro will open in 2023
The V&A has unveiled new images and details of its two east London venues which are due to open in 2023.
A new five-storey museum at Stratford Waterfront has been designed by Dublin-based O’Donnell & Tuomey, while the research and collection centre a 10-minute walk away at Here East has been designed by New York’s Diller Scofidio & Renfro with support from Austin Smith:Lord.
Together the projects comprise V&A East, which will open to the public in 2023 and is part of the £1.1bn investment in culture and education forming part of the Olympic legacy.
The museum (pictured above) will have two galleries and offer panoramic views of the surrounding area. It will sit alongside the London College of Fashion, a new Sadler’s Wells venue and new BBC studios.
Across Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park, the collection centre (pictured below) will be a home for 250,000 objects and 917 archives spanning the entirety of the V&A’s collection and will allow visitors to learn about curation and see items which have been in storage for decades.
Sadiq Khan, mayor of London, said: “As London’s centre of gravity extends east, our plans for East Bank make sure that high-quality culture and education are right at the heart of the development and of our Olympic legacy”.
Jeremy Wright, secretary of state for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport, said: “These ambitious plans will bring the museum and its vast collection to new audiences and help continue the economic regeneration that East London has undergone since 2012.”
