Miatta Fahnbulleh quits role as minster for devolution, faith and communities

Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government minister Miatta Fahnbulleh has resigned from her role and called on Keir Starmer to “set a timetable” for an orderly transition.
Fahnbulleh was the first Labour minister to resign yesterday, quitting her role as minster for devolution, faith and communities, in the fallout of Labour’s local election results.
She has since been followed by Jess Phillips,, Alex Davies-Jones and Zubir Ahmed as speculation grows that health secretary Wes Streeting will launch a leadership challenge tomorrow.
In her resignation letter Fahnbulleh wrote: “Mistakes such as the winter fuel payment and cuts to the support provided to disabled people have left too many of my constituents doubting our mission. And the message on the doorstep was clear: you, Prime Minister, have lost the trust and confidence of the public.”
She said she is proud of the work she did as minister for energy consumers in securing energy bill discounts for 6 million families and starting the government’s Warm Homes Plan.
In her current role she worked on rolling out the Pride in Place Programme and on the English Devolution and Community Empowerment Act.
