But new orders fall as private commercial work lags
Construction output in the second quarter was up 0.3% on the first three months of the year, according to official figures.
The office for National Statistics said that both new work and repair and maintenance grew by 0.4% and 0.2% respectively over the three month period.
It said new infrastructure work grew by 1.9% during the period, meaning it was the biggest contributor to the quarterly growth.
But it added that total construction new orders fell by 11.8% in the second quarter compared to the first which it said came mainly from private commercial new work and public other new work.
The ONS said monthly output in June was down 0.1% – following a 0.8% fall in May – which it said was down to a decrease in new work, which fell by 0.3%, whilst repair and maintenance showed no growth.
The wider economy grew by 0.4% during the second quarter with June showing growth of 0.3% up on May’s figure which was revised down from 0.1% to zero growth.
