Old Kent Road scheme to be decided tomorrow evening

The proposals consist of a 25-storey tower and a nine-storey shoulder block

Stitch architects’ designs for a 25-storey residential tower in South London are set to be given the green light at a council meeting tomorrow.

The 170-home scheme in the Old Kent Road area of Southwark has been recommended for approval by the borough’s planning officer.

The scheme would see the construction of a part 25, part 23-storey tower and a nine-storey shoulder block, with 40% of the homes being affordable.

A Jewsons timber yard on the site would be demolished and replaced with new premises including a double height covered yard beneath the scheme’s communal terrace.

It would be located on Ilderton road, an industrial area currently seeing significant residential development. The scheme would neighbour a 3,500-home masterplan by Studio Egret West consisting of 19 towers up to 32 storeys in height.

Others working on the project team include landscape architect Fabrik, daylight consultant Avison Young, structural engineer Walsh and planning consultant HGH Consulting.

The planning officer’s report said the scheme was “strongly supported” by officers because of its affordable housing, the quality of accommodation and the overall design standards.

It received just one objection from a member of the public over the increase of housing in the area, which the planning officer said was justified because of the borough’s need for affordable housing.
