Stanton Williams’ UCL East campus has been named building of the year at the 2026 RIBA London Awards.

The £250m Marshgate scheme, the biggest development in the university’s 200-year history, was praised by the jury as “an expression of confidence in the future”.

Judges described the eight-storey building in Stratford as “beautifully implemented” and “audacious in both programme and concept”.

It was among 43 winners recognised at a ceremony held yesterday evening for this year’s RIBA London awards, which is by far the largest of all of the institute’s regional awards.

Special awards were handed to Levitt Bernstein’s Plashet Road in Newham, which scooped the Sustainability Award and Squire & Partners’ Space House, which picked up the Conservation Award.

Matthew Glen of Feilden Fowles was named project architect of the year for his work on Urban Nature Project at the Natural History Museum, while BAT Studio’s The Blooming Shed was awarded Small Project of the Year.

SPID Theatre was handed Client of the Year for the eponymous theatre scheme at Kensal House Community Rooms, designed by Studio Sam Causer.

RIBA London director, John Nahar, said: “Once again, the 2026 RIBA London Awards winners roster showcases and celebrates exemplary architecture that is actively shaping London.

”From new homes and schools to major infrastructure upgrades, cultural destinations and the creative transformation of existing buildings. These projects combine technical excellence, environmental ambition and social impact, showcasing design at its most confident, creative and forward-looking.”

RIBA London Award winners will now be considered for a RIBA National Award in recognition of their architectural excellence, which will be announced on 9 July.

The shortlist for the RIBA Stirling Prize for the best building of the year will be drawn from the RIBA National Award-winning projects later in the year.
