Scheme part of wider expansion of airport including practice’s new third terminal
RSHP has completed a concourse as part of a major expansion of Taiwan’s largest airport which is currently under construction.
The practice, which is leading on the design of the new Terminal 3 at Taoyuan Airport, has unveiled images of the new North Concourse following its completion.
The new terminal will see the airport, currently ranked as the world’s 11th busiest, increase in size by 50% and passenger numbers rise by 45 million a year.
The North Concourse is located in the existing Terminal 2 and contains eight new gates running through a double-height gallery with views across the airfield.
The building’s structure is supported by external back trusses to maximise open space inside. Natural light enters the concourse through a translucent silver-coloured facade which has been designed to control glare and heat.
A public artwork almost 300m long, which has been inspired by Taiwanese culture, runs along the length of the concourse while each gate has been colour coded with a palette of yellow, orange and burgundy hues for intuitive wayfinding.
RSHP director Andrew Tyley said the firm had “succeeded in designing a terminal that responds holistically to the evolving needs of passengers, the airport, and the emerging aerotropolis.”
“It is a defining project that repositions Taoyuan as a global gateway and sets a new benchmark for airport architecture in the region,” he said.
The completion of the terminal is said to mark a significant milestone in the work to build the new Terminal 3, one of the largest public construction projects in Taiwan in decades.
The next stage of the scheme will be the construction of the terminal’s undulating shell roof, which RSHP said has been inspired by the country’s mountainous landscape.
