Winner will study sustainable masterplanning in emerging cities

University of Lincoln student Chloe Loader has won the 2017 RIBA Norman Foster Travelling Scholarship with a proposal for sustainable masterplanning in emerging cities.

Loader picks up a £7,000 prize and will head off to Curitiba, Brazil, and then on to Mumbai in India and Jakarta in Indonesia as part of her scholarship. She said: “It is a huge opportunity that I feel so privileged to have received.”

The jury was chaired by Norman Foster and comprised RIBA president Jane Duncan, as well as architects Eva Jiricna and Simone de Gale along with three Foster’s staffers – Spencer de Grey, Piers Heath and Narinder Sagoo.

Foster said: “Once again, the entries for the award demonstrated an exceptional range of scholarship and research. I believe the lessons [Chloe] will learn will have a direct relevance to other cities in the global south, addressing the pressing need for sustainable development worldwide.”

The jury also awarded a commendation to Sheffield University student Alexander Craig-Thompson for an entry on the changing nature of global port cities.
