Lee Ivett has been named the new head of school at the London School of Architecture (LSA), now part of the University of the Built Environment.

Ivett is currently head of the Grenfell-Baines Institute of Architecture at the University of Central Lancashire, where he is also academic lead for architecture and construction. At the LSA, he is expected to support the bedding in of the school’s new institutional structure and respond to on-going reforms to architectural education from the Architects Registration Board.

Speaking on his appointment, Ivett said: “The LSA has always stood for access, innovation and impact. I’m looking to build on its mission, ensuring our students not only thrive, but lead the changes our industry and society urgently need.

”The built environment has a fundamental role to play in tackling poverty, addressing climate change, improving health and shaping a fairer future.

”The LSA, as part of University of the Built Environment, is uniquely placed to advocate for that change, thanks to the innovative, imaginative and impactful programmes already being led by an exceptional team.”

The appointment comes after the departure of Neal Shasore in February. Shasore, who joined the LSA in 2019 and was appointed head in 2021, oversaw its relocation to new premises in Dalston and the expansion of its practice network. No reason was given for his departure.

Earlier this year, the LSA merged with the University College of Estate Management to form the University of the Built Environment. The merger ended the school’s decade as an independent provider of architectural education. Founded in 2015 by Will Hunter, the LSA was established as an alternative to traditional schools, with a model that integrates students directly into practice through paid placements.

Ashley Wheaton, vice-chancellor of the University of the Built Environment, said: “Lee’s appointment marks an important milestone for the institution and our new school. Together, we are building a forward-looking, inclusive model of education that prepares graduates to make meaningful contributions to communities, industry, and society.”

Levitt will take up the role on 17 November.
