Scheme part of wider development masterplanned by the practice in 2015

Grimshaw has been appointed to design a 1.5 million sq ft university campus in the capital of Malaysia, Kuala Lumpur.

Designed in collaboration with local practice GDP, the plans for Monash University Malaysia will accommodate 22,000 students when it opens in 2032.

The 22-storey scheme, is conceived as a series of blocks stacked and roasted over a shared podium framing a central quadrant space with learning spaces at lower levels and research space and workspace in its upper storeys. The masterplan also includes an adjoining student accommodation tower.

The scheme will be heavily planted with indigenous greenery at all levels, aiming to connect building users to the region’s tropical climate and landscape.

Grimshaw partners Keith Brewis said: “Monash University Malaysia will not only transform the university’s offer in the city but also sets learning and research distinctly within the city: connecting education with economy and knowledge with urban regeneration, for a more dynamic and cognisant university life.”

The new campus will form a key part of the wider Tun Razak Exchange masterplan, including the Lifestyle Quarter which was masterplanned by Grimshaw for the Lendlease and TRX City Joint Venture in 2015.
