NHS Trust wants to build new facility and expand life sciences cluster on surrounding land
The first images of what the redeveloped St Mary’s Hospital site in Paddington have been unveiled by Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust.
Earlier this year, Stanhope and Allies and Morrison were formally appointed to lead the masterplan to redevelop the hospital.
Parts of the London hospital date back to 1845 with the proposals for the site including a state-of-the-art teaching hospital and major trauma centre as well as a wider regeneration, including further expansion of Paddington Life Sciences – a cluster of surrounding life sciences and data companies.
The new hospital, which has been given an estimated cost of £2bn-plus, is being designed by HOK with the Stanhope and Allies and Morrison team overseeing the masterplanning process for the whole estate.

A consultation on the plans began yesterday (Thursday) with this due to run until next month ahead of a second round of consultation later this year. Planning is due to be submitted next spring.
The NHS trust said that if it got planning in 2028 construction work could get underway immediately. “This would allow the Trust to deliver a new hospital by 2035, compared to the current New Hospital Programme timetable which delays delivery until 2043 at the earliest,” it added.
The NHS Trust said the work is urgently needed as its current maintenance backlog is outstripping the amount it has been able to spend on it in recent years.
The wider team including Savills on planning, Gillespies on landscape design, Gardiner & Theobald as project manager and LCA on consultation.

The forerunner of the wider plan is a Stanton Williams scheme for a research and life sciences hub which was approved in April.
The Fleming Centre will contain laboratories and research spaces dedicated to tackling antimicrobial resistance.
It will also contain a “discovery centre” hosting exhibitions, events and partnerships with local groups, along with a canalside cafe, a community pavilion and public green spaces.
