Firm’s West Africa base built using rammed earth and low-carbon concrete
Adjaye Associates has officially opened its new office in Accra, which will serve as the base of the firm’s operations in West Africa.
The studio in the Ghanaian capital’s Cantonments district was launched with a glitzy party last week with guests from the city’s cultural and creative community.
The four-storey building, known as the Shippon Offices, features a 26m-long cantilevered volume raised above the ground and a facade of rammed-earth fins.
At ground level, the fins extend downwards to create a shaded pergola offering spaces for meetings, breaks and evening gatherings.
More than 1,300sq m of column-free workspace is provided inside with the building designed to accommodate up to 180 people.
The use of rammed earth and low-carbon concrete to construct the building reflects the practice’s commitment to environmental performance and the use of local materials, the firm said.
It said the opening of the studio “marks a significant moment for a globally recognised practice inhabiting a building of its own design in West Africa.”
The practice is based in London and has a third office in New York.
