2026 list includes a stylish coastal home, a small council-housing development and a care home for people with dementia
The Royal Society of Architects in Wales has named six projects on the shortlist for the best new building in Wales.
This year’s list for the annual regional prize includes a striking modernist home nestled on a coastal bluff by Strom Architects, the refurbishment of a Jesuit spirituality centre by Chambers Conservation Limited and a revival of a traditional Welsh farmstead by Benham Architects.
Cardiff-based Pentan Architects has two projects on the list, an “uplifting” carehome for people living with dementia and a small 20-home council housing scheme.
RSAW jury chair Martin Hall, director at Hall+ Bednarczyk, said the shortlisted projects ”exemplify the talent shown by their architects and construction teams”.
“Whether solving important social needs in elder care and housing with high standards and compassion, responding creatively to historic buildings, or showing virtuosity in the design of one-off dwellings, the six shortlisted buildings are a credit to the nation’s building culture,” Hall said.
All projects shortlisted for RIBA Awards will be visited by a regional jury with the winning projects to be announced later this spring.
The winners will then be considered for several special awards, including the RSAW Sustainability Award and RSAW Building of the Year, before being considered for a RIBA National Award, which will be announced this summer.
The shortlist for the RIBA Stirling Prize will be drawn from the RIBA National Award-winning projects and announced in September. The Stirling Prize winner will be announced in October.
