Buildings up to 29 storeys to form latest phase of Berkeley’s canalside neighbourhood
Sheppard Robson has been granted planning approval for 500 private homes in north-west London in buildings rising up to 29-storeys in height.
The latest phase of Berkeley’s Grand Union scheme spans three high-rise blocks and follows the approval earlier this year of 168 social rent homes on a neighbouring plot.
Berkeley is redeveloping the former Northfields Industrial Estate in Brent into a canalside neighbourhood which is set to deliver around 3,350 homes when complete.
Around 1,000 homes have already been completed with the wider mixed-use scheme to also contain commercial, retail, leisure and community spaces.
The masterplan has been designed to reflect the site’s industrial past and its closeness to the Grand Union Canal and the River Brent, with Sheppard Robson’s latest phase aiming to link green spaces along the canal with the scheme’s residential centre.
The three towers will be faced with a light-coloured brick and industrial-inspired detailing including a curved park-front pavilion, pale green precast concrete and green metal balconies.
Sheppard Robson partner Anna Shapiro said the scheme was “about creating a sense of living with nature, with a range of settings designed to support people’s everyday connection to the landscape around them”.
The practice is also working with Berkeley to deliver the second and third phases of the masterplan.
