Practice working with Arcadis on plans for cluster of high-rise buildings on banks of the river Seine
RSHP and Arcadis have won a competition to design an 8ha mixed-use development at the gateway of Paris’ business district.
The architect, which has a long history of working in the French capital that began with its landmark Centre Pompidou in 1977, is set to design a cluster of high-rise residential, office and leisure buildings along the banks of the River Seine.
Pierre-Yves Guice, chief executive of local public body Paris La Défense said the project offered one of the “most significant development opportunities of the decade in the greater Paris region”.
The project’s multi-disciplinary team also includes Atelier SOIL, Altitude 35, Atelier Franck Boutté, Urban Eco and Mobius.
The team triumphed over around thirty rival submissions including several global practices. Guice said the winning Franco-British team was chosen for its “complementary expertise, the quality of its references, and its bold vision”.
The project, Rives-Défense, will be delivered through a partnership-based approach with a strategy building on existing structures and seeking to restore lost views of the river.
RSHP senior associate Nicola Carnevali said the firm’s vision was for a series of tall buildings along a historic axis aligned with the Louvre which step down in height towards the riverside.
“Our ambition is to reveal the site’s uniqueness by transforming and amplifying what already exists: preserving what distinguishes the site today whilst catalysing its future evolution,” Carnevali said.
RSHP is also currently working on a project to transform the 1.5ha Jean Moulin site in La Défense into a mixed-use development centred around a new green promenade and pocket parks.
