Scheme conceived as a multi-functional venue able to host live music and cultural events

Palermo FC has unveiled designs by Populous for the redevelopment of the Renzo Barbera Stadium as the Sicilian club advances plans to modernise its historic home and create a wider urban regeneration project for the city.
The submitted planning application forms the next stage of a scheme first announced in March and would transform the ageing stadium into a multifunctional venue capable of hosting UEFA-level football, concerts and cultural events alongside Palermo FC matches.
The project aims to reposition the ground as a year-round civic destination rather than a standalone stadium, with new public spaces, community facilities and amenities intended to strengthen links with the surrounding neighbourhood.
A redesigned and fully covered seating bowl would bring fans closer to the pitch with the plans also including upgraded hospitality areas, more food and beverage spaces, dedicated event spaces and accessibility improvements.
Populous said the redevelopment had been designed to respect the stadium’s historic relationship with Favorita Park and views towards Monte Pellegrino, while introducing contemporary architectural elements and improved spectator facilities.
Sustainability measures include photovoltaic systems, rainwater recovery and resource-efficient technologies aimed at reducing operational energy demand. The surrounding public realm would also prioritise walking, cycling, public transport and electric vehicle access.
Silvia Prandelli, senior principal at Populous Italia, said the project would create “a new destination for the city, fully integrated with local transport infrastructure”.
Alongside the stadium overhaul, Palermo FC wants to build a new adjacent headquarters building containing club offices, a museum and supporter facilities.
