Brutalist 1970s building to be demolished to make way for six new buildings up to 15 storeys tall
Sheppard Robson has been given the green light for a 1,000-home redevelopment of Harrow council’s former headquarters.
The Poet’s Corner scheme has been designed for the Harrow Strategic Development Partnership, a joint venture between Wates Residential and Harrow council.
It will see the demolition of Harrow Civic Centre, a six-storey brutalist building completed in 1973 which served as Harrow council’s headquarters until it was vacated in 2023 to make way for the site’s redevelopment.
The hybrid application was approved by councillors last week with detailed consent granted for 530 homes across three buildings between three and 12 storeys in height, consisting of 422 build to rent homes and 108 London living rent homes.
Outline consent has been granted for a further 528 homes in three more buildings between six and 15 storeys in height, along with around 1,000sq m of non-residential floorspace.
The overall scheme will contain 1,058 homes, 192 of which will be affordable, 4,000sq m of ground-level children’s play space and two new public realm spaces with a combined footprint of 7,500sq m.
Sheppard Robson is lead architect and masterplanner, with the project team also including BDP as landscape architect, Stanteic on planning, civils and structures, WSP on building services and sustainability, Iceni on townscape and GIA on wind.
