Projects by Hawkins Brown and Corstorphine & Wright joined by host of small residential schemes

Eight projects have been shortlisted for the 2026 RIBA East Midlands Awards incuding a new arts building at Nottingham Trent University and the retrofit of a derelict former rectory.

Nottingham Trent University’s Design and Digital Arts Building, designed by Hawkins\Brown and CPMG Architects, contains film, animation, UX design, gaming design, graphic design and illustration facilities, along with a dedicated gallery space showcasing student projects from the Nottingham School of Art & Design.

Apart from an office scheme designed by Corstorphine & Wright with Walker Associate Architects, all other projects on the shortlist are small residential schemes.

They include Old Rectory by Brisco Loran, a home inside a restored rectory, and Hidden House by Julian Cowie Architects, a contemporary private home.

RIBA East Midlands jury chair Patrick Richard, principal director at Stanton Williams, said projects on the shortlist demonstrate a “commitment to placing people at the forefront of their agenda - focusing on enhancing the experience and wellbeing of their occupants while creating sustainable, resilient spaces that respond to their cultural, social and physical context.

Richard added: ”Each of these projects, regardless of their scale and budget, demonstrate ingenuity in responding to cultural and social change, demonstrating how good design can enhance people’s lives while ensuring a responsible, sustainable use of resources.”

All projects shortlisted for RIBA Awards will be visited by a regional jury with the winning projects to be announced later this spring.

The winners will then be considered for several RIBA East Midlands Special Awards, including the RIBA East Midlands Sustainability Award and RIBA East Midlands Building of the Year, before being considered for a RIBA National Award, which will be announced this summer.

The shortlist for the RIBA Stirling Prize will be drawn from the RIBA National Award-winning projects and announced in September. The Stirling Prize winner will be announced in October.
