Golden Lane is one of two housing estates run by the City of London Corporation that lie within the Square Mile

The City of London Corporation has approved a £152m funding boost to accelerate upgrades across the 12 housing estates it manages.

The allocation, approved last week by the City’s top decision-making body, the Court of Common Council, brings the major works programme to a value of £211m.

The new funding is intended to improve the quality, safety and sustainability of 2,900 homes, including social housing, in the Square Mile and six London boroughs.

Only two of the City’s housing estates, Golden Lane and Middlesex Street, lie within its historic boundaries. The rest are in Hackney, Islington, Lambeth, Lewisham, Southwark and Tower Hamlets.

The work includes upgrades to kitchens, bathrooms, heating systems, lifts, roofs and communal spaces.

“This investment marks a turning point for our residents and our estates and ensures we can continue to deliver on the programme of major works and improvements that is already underway,” said Helen Fentimen, chair of the City of London Corporation’s community and children’s services committee.

“We recognise that the scale of work required has long exceeded the resources available within the HRA and we have taken decisive action to put that right.”
