Products must meet new cylinder testing requirements or demonstrate equivalent certification by January 2027 to retain PAS 24 compliance

The PAS 24 standard, which defines enhanced security performance criteria for windows and doorsets, has been updated to reflect modern burglary techniques.

The latest revision, PAS 24:2022+A1:2024, includes a new test method designed to evaluate resistance to current attack strategies, with a specific focus on lock cylinder vulnerabilities.

The updated standard comes into effect immediately but includes a transition period. Until January 2027, manufacturers may continue certifying products to the previous version. After that date, only products meeting the new requirements will be eligible for PAS 24 certification. Lock cylinders must either pass the revised PAS 24 test, meet the requirements of TS 007-1:2024, or achieve an equivalent certification such as Sold Secure Diamond (SS312:2024).

The revisions coincide with recent data from the Office for National Statistics, which reported approximately 422,000 domestic burglary offences in England and Wales in 2024. Many of these incidents involve targeted attacks on cylinder locks—an area directly addressed in the new standard.

For architects specifying products on residential or commercial projects, this update is a key regulatory shift. Compliance with PAS 24 is often a requirement for insurance and can support Building Control approval. Practices should review specifications with their chosen suppliers to ensure products are on track for compliance ahead of the 2027 deadline.
