Work has begun on site on a controversial “Tesco town” development designed by Collado Collins in north-east London.
The £105 million mixed-use development in Highams Park, by Tesco’s development arm Spenhill, features housing around a park, a pedestrianised street of shops and a 3,500sq m Tesco.
Tesco first submitted plans for the 4.5ha site in 2005 but these were rejected, and Collado Collins was hired to come up with a new scheme. Although Cabe praised its proposal, the mayor of London initially ordered Waltham Forest Council to reject it. The project was then called in by the communities minister who also rejected it, leading to a fresh planning application.
Jonathan Collins, partner at Collado Collins, said: “We are very excited that this project will be realised. It is a truly mixed-use scheme arranged around a quality public realm that will give Highams Park a new vibrant centre.”
The practice has a number of similar developments for Tesco in for planning.
