Six-strong selection ranged from 1860s hotel to pioneering 1990s county archive

Government heritage adviser Historic England estimates there are more than 500,000 listed buildings in England. The overwhelming majority were granted protected status during Queen Elizabeth II’s 70-year reign.

But to mark the late Queen’s platinum jubilee earlier this year, six new listings were confirmed by the Department for Digital, Culture Media and Sport – all at grade II, and all of them with a direct connection to the monarch.

They ranged in age from a Victorian hotel to a 1990s public-records building and in scale from a post-war church in Birmingham to markers on the M62 motorway. The choices also reflected important social, technical and cultural changes which have taken place in the years since 1952.
