New Barnsbury Estate scheme to span 12 buildings up to 21 storeys in height

Islington council has approved plans by Pollard Thomas Edwards for a 1,116-home redevelopment of the New Barnsbury Estate in north London.

The hybrid application for Newlon Housing Trust and Mount Anvil Limited will span 12 buildings between three and 21 storeys in height, with 38.2% of the scheme’s homes to be provided as social rent.

Islington councillors voted to back the scheme at a meeting of its planning committee yesterday evening.

It will see the demolition of all existing buildings and structures on the 1960s estate, with 711 homes to be built in the first phase and a further 405 homes in a second phase which forms the outline part of the application.

The proposals also include 1,500sq m of commercial floorspace, a replacement community centre and a nursery.

The project team includes landscape architect Farrer Huxley, planning consultant DP9, structural and civil engineer Stantec, sustainability consultant Aecom and townscape consultant Montagu Evans.
