Former home of the Chartered Insurance Institute to be given facelift

Lifschutz Davidson Sandilands has been appointed to design the refurbishment of a grade II-listed livery hall in the City of London.
The practice will act as lead consultant across RIBA stages 1 to 4 on the overhaul of 20-21 Aldermanbury, a 1930s building directly behind Guildhall on the northern edge of the Square Mile.
The £390,000 design job, which will also cover an adjoining office building, will be carried out for the City of London Corporation, which owns the site.
The five-storey Portland stone-faced building was originally built as the head office of the Chartered Insurance Institute and opened by King George V in 1934, and is now mainly used as event space.
It was designed in the Tudorbethan style in reference to the tradition of City livery halls and is said by Historic England to contain multiple significant details, including richly fitted out interiors and “striking” murals by children’s book illustrator C Walter Hodges.
Lifschutz Davidson Sandilands’ contracted role also includes preparation for a design and build main contractor and a continuing role as technical advisor through construction, handover and post-completion.
The job is set to start on 13 April and last for just over two years.
