Situated on the main staircase at the firm’s Sheffield office, the mural features local landmarks as well as projects delivered by the practice over the course of its 40+-year history.

Painted freehand

The 10 x 2.5m artwork took 110 hours to complete. It was hand-drawn and painted freehand without the use of projectors or stencils. Barnsley-based Briscoe is well known locally for his bespoke wall art, having delivered projects in hospitals, schools, universities, food courts and commercial spaces.

He said, “This is one of my first major pieces in Sheffield city centre. I have built my following in my home town, but now I’m focused on branching out further into Yorkshire. I always try to bring comedy and character into my drawings – that slightly bizarre, playful energy is a big part of my style. I hope people will keep noticing new details in the mural for years to come.”

Celebration of the city

Andy Illingworth, head of interiors at HLM, said, “This mural is more than a piece of art – it’s a celebration of the city that has shaped so much of our practice. Adam has captured Sheffield’s character, creativity, and heritage beautifully, while also telling HLM’s own story.

”Supporting local talent is central to what we do, and commissioning this mural reflects our commitment to investing in the people, creativity and culture that make Sheffield unique. It brings a real sense of place and energy to our workspace, and we hope it inspires everyone who visits.”
