Development includes 139 flats and London’s first Six Senses hotel
The scheme to turn the former Whiteleys shopping centre in London into upmarket flats and a hotel has reached practical completion.
Designed by Foster & Partners, the development, which has an overall value of £1bn, has involved turning the historic shopping centre in Bayswater into 139 luxury apartments and London’s first Six Senses hotel.
The redevelopment is being headed by a joint venture between MARK, the rebranded Meyer Bergman, and Hong Kong listed developer CC Land with development manager on the scheme, luxury property firm Valouran set up by the co-founder of previous incumbent Finchatton.
The grade II-listed building, originally designed in 1911, has been revamped with key heritage features – including the original glass dome and clocktower – restored, while the building’s historic staircase has been relocated elsewhere.
Now called The Whiteley, the scheme’s residents, the first of whom moved in in 2024 after problems with the glazing held up completion, have access to amenities including a padel court, spa and dedicated children’s playroom.
Interior designers to have worked on the residences include RH Contract, Maxalto and Maoliosa Murray.
Average prices being fetched by the apartments are running up to £3,600 per sq ft.
As well as the apartments and 109-key hotel, the scheme has 19 commercial units with arrivals slated for this year including indoor golf destination 14 Clubs, premium pharmacy Whiteley Health, Japanese mochi bar Yuum, the South Kensington based salon Oblique Beauty and luxury food store Willy’s.
Main contractor on the scheme was Laing O’Rourke which beat Sir Robert McAlpine to the job back in 2019.
But the scheme was one of several problem jobs that helped O’Rourke rack up a £288m pre-tax loss for the year to March 2023.
Others who worked on the £1bn development included project manager Gardiner & Theobald, QS Alinea, civil and structural engineer AKT II and WSP as the traffic and waste engineer.
