    Harlow promises

    2006-06-23T00:00:00Z

In Harlow North (News June 9), Ropemaker Properties has no specific target for self-comissioned housing - the calculation of 4,000 is entirely speculative.

Silly season campaign isn't the answer

    2006-06-16T00:00:00Z

Cabe's campaign focusing on bad design looks suspiciously like one of those ideas dreamt up to fill the airwaves between the health of Rooney's metatarsal and the Cameron charm offensive.

Mediocrity is just not good enough

    2006-06-16T00:00:00Z

It seems churlish, I know, in this week of celebrating all things worthy - architecture, bikes and saving the planet - to come across all maudlin, but I am a Manc after all. And heaven knows, I'm miserable now.

Self-build already a fine UK tradition

    2006-06-16T00:00:00Z

Self-build communities may very well thrive in continental Europe (Leader June 9) but they have a longer history in this country. We do not need to change our planning system to create more.

    Harlow, I love you

    2006-06-16T00:00:00Z

Harlow is not such an unlikely place to kick-start a housing revolution. It has a strong history of innovative housing and, indeed, town planning. It has to be acknowledged that not all of it has worked, but also that a great deal of it has, and still does!

    What's in a name?

Phillip Seaward (Letters June 2) apparently wants the Arb to prosecute people outside the construction industry who use the title "architect".

Relax and take your eye off the ball

    2006-06-09T00:00:00Z

Harlow is an unlikely place to kick start a housing revolution. One of London's eight post-war new towns, it boasts Britain's first pedestrian precinct and its first tower block too, but its days for experimentation seem over.

    London games need landscape architects

    2006-06-09T00:00:00Z

Hosting the 2012 Olympics is an opportunity for Britain to shine on a global stage, not just as a sporting nation but as a nation of place-makers. We could win gold for track or water based events. We could also create a place with meaning for our crowded 21st century ...

    Commonwealth Institute must stay

    2006-06-09T00:00:00Z

We disagree with BD (Leader June 2) that the Commonwealth Institute "would not be a huge loss if it were to go". It's a fabulous and dramatic bit of post-war architecture, with a great bit of landscape design by Sylvia Crowe. It's also a very popular landmark. In the last ...

    No need for bill

    2006-06-09T00:00:00Z

It is quite wrong for the government to attempt to use primary legislation to delist the Commonwealth Institute. There is no good reason to initiate a Parliamentary bill when there is adequate planning legislation in place which deals with the delisting process.

    Quality control

    2006-06-09T00:00:00Z

Recent articles and correspondence have stated that architects from outside the EU have to pay £2,000, pass a 45 minute interview and sit a part III examination to join the register. This is misleading.
