Timber firm launches competition to build up in the world’s densest cities

An international design competition with a €10,000 first prize has been launched to find ways of densifying cities using timber.

The Plan B: City Above the City competition is open to architects and students. Entrants must pick a building in the centre of one of the world’s most-populated cities and add storeys using a particular wood product.

The design must either be integrated with the existing structure or knit itself into the urban fabric of the city.

Entrants are encouraged to design construction systems that draw on the performance characteristics of a variety of wood technologies.

The competition is being run by Metsä Wood and judged by a jury that includes Vancouver-based  architect Michael Green and Mike Kane, a lecturer at London South Bank University and director of KMK Architects.

Green said: “We need to start building up and stop tearing down. We have an alternative. A building extension constructed with a timber frame can be a fast, sustainable and inexpensive solution.”

The winner will receive €10,000, with two second prizes of €5,000 and five third prizes of €2,000. The top 10 entries will be published by the company.

The deadline is September 30.
