In their book Learning from Las Vegas, Venturi, Scott Brown and Izenour set up a simple building classification system: the “duck” (the building’s useable space is secondary to its symbolic form) and the “decorated shed” (the building’s form responds to its requirements and decoration is independently applied to it).
