Will Alsop masterplanned vision takes shape

An elaborate city-centre fountain designed by Gillespies landscape architects has been completed in Bradford.

A 4,000sq m mirror pool is central to the 2.4ha public space, originally masterplanned by Will Alsop, which includes a fountain that sprays water 30m in the air — apparently the highest in a UK city.

The pool can be drained to make way for a large events space, or partly drained to reveal causeways allowing people to walk through the pool between the fountains. And surrounding the water is a 4m-wide, south-facing hardwood boardwalk.

Tom Walker, partner at Gillespies, said: “This new centrepiece for Bradford acts as a pivotal focal point, and gives Bradford a new postcard identity with the unique dynamic mirror pool and high quality landscape.”
