Energy-efficient home proposals by HLM and Bere Architects have won the Welsh Passive House architectural competition.

HLM’s house boasts paper insulation, movement sensors to control all fixed lighting and a wood pellet biomass boiler to provide hot water.

The scheme, which will be carried out by HLM’s Cardiff office, will also feature dry stone walling and locally sourced replacement cement.

Bere designed a three-bed home which will produce 85% less carbon emissions than a standard home.

The house features a wildflower meadow roof and also includes dry stone walling and larch cladding on the upper storey. Evacuated glass tube solar panels provide 65% of the building’s hot water throughout the year, which is supplemented by an energy efficient gas boiler. Sheep’s wool is used for interior insulation while electricity is supplemented by separate photovoltaic panels.

Both houses have triple glazed windows and are made from timber frames.

The houses will be built at a former steelworks site in Ebbw Vale.

The competition was jointly run by the Welsh Assembly Government and Blaenau Gwent County Borough Council in association with the Building Research Establi
