Bandirma launches design contest to deliver “new genre” of regional recreation centre

The Turkish port city of Bandirma has kicked off an international design competition aimed at turning its existing park into both a new platform for recreation and a design hub.

Around 100 kilometres across the inland Sea of Marmara from Istanbul, the city is positioning itself as the nation’s principal future surface-port connection with Europe and wants to develop a “new genre of park” with spatial design and planning at its heart.

Edip Uğur, mayor of the Balıkesir Metropolitan Municipality, said the vision for the park was that it would serve as “both a recreational area to enrich daily life” and as a “space for local design schools”.

The brief stipulates that submissions must not only provide necessary new space at Bandirma Park, but also “regard the existing architectural heritage and unique characteristics of the natural landscape”.

The completion jury is led by French architect and urban planner Odile Decq. First prize for the competition is 360,000 Turkish Lira, equivalent to approximately €100,000.

Deadline for entries is February 24.
