In not saying what sort of engineers have signed the lack of respect e-petition last week, Boots rather reinforces the point that they are making. Presumably they are consultants of some kind.
Boots goes on to say, rather flippantly, that he/she awaits news of a campaign to protect the title of plumbers, sparkies (sparks actually) and grease monkeys. But that is exactly what is needed for those who are properly trained and qualified, to distinguish them from the mass who aren’t and who leave chaos in their wake.
Builders and tradesmens licensing, under which only properly qualified tradesmen would eventually be allowed to offer their services, would in time achieve much needed professionalisation of the UK construction industry. Coincidentally, it would probably also see more widespread safe working practices and thus an improvement in safety, far more than the ridiculous bureaucracy of the CDM regulations is ever likely to achieve.
