Margaret Thatcher: sneering?

Actually many of the local authority architects’ departments that she abolished (she despised both councils and the professions) provided great opportunities for young architects — I know, I was one. True, we didn’t have the benefits of the profit motive, fear of bankruptcy, touting for work, huge PI costs, litigious clients or the lottery of competitions and we had the silly, old-fashioned idea that architecture should serve the community rather than powerful corporations or totalitarian states. How she would have sneered.
