Stephen Marshall's Wenlock Basin scheme set for approval

Stephen Marshall Architects’ plans for a £145 million residential development on Wenlock Basin in Hackney, east London, look set to clear a final planning hurdle next week.

Council planners have recommended granting permission for the demolition of warehouses and offices on the site, which is in the Regents Canal Conservation Area.

Original designs were drawn up by Munkenbeck & Marshall in 2008. The practice split later that year and the project is now being overseen by Stephen Marshall Architects for A2 / Dominion and United House.

Marshall said: “The scheme replaces a series of tin sheds one of which was occupied by White Cube, who have now relocated to Bermondsey. The street frontage is over 180m long and the massing strategy adopts the idea of “bookends” formed by placing brick elements to the north and south relating to adjacent existing listed buildings.”
