Simpson’s sky deck scrapped in Boomerang changes

Plans for a sky deck at the top of ‘The Boomerang’, Ian Simpson’s proposed 51-storey tower on London’s South Bank, have been scrapped as part of a series of changes to the scheme.

Developer St George, owned by Berkeley Homes, has submitted an application to change various aspects of the proposals before construction starts later this year.

The changes to the project would allow a significant increase in the number of flats to be built.

Planning permission has been granted for 96 flats and a 261-bedroom hotel. The changes would mean a total of 280 flats being built in the tower.

Simpson is behind the design changes, which include moving the hotel out of the tower to another part of the site and reducing its size to 150 bedrooms

Such a move would make the tower entirely residential, allowing the sky deck to be removed from the plans in line with the London mayor’s planning guidelines for tall buildings.

St George has also asked the London Borough of Southwark to accept payment in lieu of on-site affordable housing.
