Pop-up will open in Winnipeg next January
A fledgling British practice has won an international competition to design a pop-up restaurant on a frozen river in Winnipeg where temperatures last winter dropped to minus 37 deg C.
The Canadian city was hit by the polar vortex weather event which saw cities in Canada and the US hit with record low temperatures.
The average temperature in Winnipeg between December last year and March was minus 18.3 deg C.
Sheffield practice OS31 was set up in June by Tony Broomhead who had spent the previous three years teaching at Sheffield University’s school of architecture.
The pop-up will be built at the mouth of the Assiniboine and Red rivers and is run by a number of Winnipeg’s top chefs. It includes a heated dining room and heated outdoor toilets.
The restaurant can cater for up to 60 people and will open on January 22 next year for a number of weeks. It is the third year the restaurant has opened but the first time an open competition has been organised for it.
The competition was organised by local art and architecture gallery RAW which is also running the restaurant. Diners are advised to bring warm clothing including long johns.
