Good to see self-build being promoted at the moment (News March 28), as seen in the recent Policy Exchange report.

However, nothing seems to have changed to make it any easier since we published our detailed study for the Joseph Rowntree Foundation in 2001 (Homes to DIY for: the UK’s self-build housing market in the 21st century, by James Barlow, Robert Jackson and Jim Meikle).

Apart from the land and finance issues, if we are really to make this a genuine alternative model for new build we need to look at Japan, where high-quality, well-designed houses are produced to order by large manufacturers.
