Zaha Hadid Architects’ turnover jumped from £77m to £83m this year as the Middle East took over as the firm’s largest market.

The group brought in a total of £39.3m from the Middle East in the year to 30 April 2025, up from £27.1m the year before, with the region now accounting for almost half of its work.

However, its pre-tax profit fell by 60% during the period to just £342,000, down from £907,000 for the year before as a £2m hike in staff costs from £42m to £44m hit the firm’s bottom line.

The drop in profit came as turnover in Asia, formerly the practice’s biggest market, fell from £35.6m in 2024 to £26m in 2025, while its income from the UK crashed from £1.7m to £430,000.

Turnover was up in the firm’s third largest market, Europe, from £10.4m to £13.2m, but fell in North America from £2.3m to £1.2m, while it grew substantially in its smallest region, Africa, from £155,000 to £2.9m.

Major schemes completed this year included the first phase of the Navi Mumbai International Airport in Mumbai, which was opened by India’s prime minister Narendra Modi in October, and the Riyadh Metro in Saudi Arabia.

The practice also marked the completion of construction works at Western Sydney Airport and the opening of the 60,000-seat Xi’an International Football Centre stadium in China.

The firm paid out £4.4m in emoluments to five directors during the year, with the highest paid director receiving £890,000 - more than double the total pre-tax profit earned by the firm during the year - although this was down from £911,000 paid to the same individual in 2024.

The accounts show the group was owed £39m from debtors while owing creditors £31.7m.

Staff levels stayed relatively stable during the year, dipping slightly from 436 technical employees to 425.
