Projects by Donald Insall Associates, MawsonKerr and two by Studio MUTT also make shortlist

Three projects by BDP have been shortlisted for the 2026 RIBA North West Awards, including a science and engineering teaching building at Manchester Metropolitan University.

The Manchester-based practice has also been shortlisted for an office scheme in Altrincham and, together with HNA Architects, the transformation of Oldham’s grade II-listed former town hall into a foodhall.

Other schemes on this year’s list include Donald Insall Associates’ restoration of the grade I-listed Rochdale Town Hall, Studio MUTT’s overhaul of Royal Albert Dock in Liverpool and the Manser Practice’s Isle of Man Ferry Terminal.

Three small residential projects have also been shortlisted, MawsonKerr Architects’ Byre House, Gagarin Studio Architects’ Bank Barn Reimagined and Studio Bark’s Orchard House.

RIBA North West jury chair Pablo Iglesias, founder of Grated Apple, said: “This year’s shortlist reflects both the depth and breadth of architectural quality across the North West, spanning a wide range of scales, typologies and social contexts.

“From the sensitive reinvention of heritage assets and civic buildings, to the creation of progressive learning environments and contemporary public realm, the projects demonstrate architecture’s capacity to deliver lasting civic, social and cultural value.”

All projects shortlisted for RIBA Awards will be visited by a regional jury with the winning projects to be announced later this spring.

The winners will then be considered for several RIBA North West Special Awards, including the RIBA North West Sustainability Award and RIBA North West Building of the Year, before being considered for a RIBA National Award, which will be announced this summer.

The shortlist for the RIBA Stirling Prize will be drawn from the RIBA National Award-winning projects and announced in September. The Stirling Prize winner will be announced in October.
