1920s private members club updated for a new generation of visitors
Derby-based hospitality practice Morrison Design has unveiled images of its completed refurbishment of an exclusive London private members club in Chelsea.
The firm’s transformation of the Sloane Club has sought to reimagine the space for a new generation of visitors while staying true to the history of the club, which was founded in 1922 by Princess Helena, the daughter of Queen Victoria.
The central element of the scheme is a courtyard dining area which was previously uncovered and only suitable for use in good weather.
The refurbishment has added a retractable roof to the space, which lead architects Peter Newman-Earp and Les Witten said has now become “the hub of the club”.
“We wanted to maximize the open space and create something timeless, with clean, uncluttered lines,” Witten said, adding: “The structure dictated a lot of the architecture - it was a challenging space but the result feels effortless.”

The refurbishment has aimed to open up the club’s spaces while still allowing guests to discover “intimate pockets with character,” Newman-Earp said, including an alcove in the reception lounge with a fireplace.
The club includes 64 guest bedrooms, five bar and restaurant spaces, three private dining rooms, new accessible lifts, a new wellness and gym suite and a redesigned front of house.
Construction of the project by main contractor 3 Interiors started in January 2024 and completed last month, with the project team also including Russell Sage on interior design, Thornley Lumb on M&E and Axiom Structures on structures and civils.
