Scheme inspired by fashion brand’s trademark tartan designs
Proposals by AndArchitects for an extension of Vivienne Westwood’s headquarters in Battersea have been given planning permission.
The fashion designer was one of the first creative businesses to move to the neighbourhood, setting up its atelier and office next to Battersea Bridge in 1995 in an area which at the time was mostly comprised of warehouses and industrial units.
The brief given to Battersea-based AndArchitects for the scheme was to combine the history of the site’s industrial buildings and Vivienne Westwood’s trademark tartan designs.
The extension will be constructed using modular systems, embracing a “fragmented, collage-effect” on its facade which has been inspired by the patchwork aesthetic of tartan and plaid, according to the fashion brand.
The interior has been designed to foster collaboration and creativity, with “informal” staircases connecting floors to encourage teamwork between departments.
The project brings all of the firm’s departments together under one roof as part of a wider organisational restructure while providing a larger space for its studios.
The project team includes Webb Yates on structures and M&E, DRK Planning Limited on planning,Gelling Landscape Studio on landscape, TTP Consulting Limited on transport and Iceni Projects on heritage and townscape.
