Ron Heath’s point about affordable housing was well made (Letters June 21) but we also need to define affordable housing.

The alternative is that the word is bandied around, used in different ways by different people, resulting in an unhelpful debate.

I suggest that the only definition to make sense is “housing provided for sale or rent at less than the market price” — in other words, subsidised housing. If only we could bring ourselves to use the S word, maybe it would focus attention on where the subsidy is going to come from.
